Over 4 years ago, we started our free laundry program in response to shower guests asking if we could help them wash their clothing (rather than throw them out when they got too dirty). Doing laundry and having clean clothes and bedding are a given for most of us. However, for people who are experiencing homelessness, doing laundry and having clean clothes are luxuries.
Twice a month at a laundromat in west LB, a team of volunteers and I provide funds, soap, dryer sheets, and snacks to people who are unhoused. We have 50 to 70 people participate at each session. Because doing laundry is not a quick process, many of our participants chat with us and among themselves about current events, their challenges and successes, and other topics. Community is evident during our laundry days.
Thus far in 2026, about 800 participants have done about 1,400 loads (1 load is equivalent to 1 to 5 loads of a typical load of household laundry). Our participants are grateful for the opportunity to do their laundry and thrilled to having clean clothing and bedding. Please consider making a donation to support our free laundry program -- a program that nurtures community and restores dignity and humanity.
