September 1, 2026 marks Margareta's would-have-been 21st birthday. A day that brings with it both deep love and deep sorrow.
It's been 17 long years since she died on September, 30, 2009. One of the main ways I try to keep Margareta's enduring legacy alive is to donate my time supporting others in their early grief.
I'm proud to support the amazing grief support services provided by Common Ground Grief - a nonprofit based in Long Beach, CA. I volunteer as a grief support group facilitator, have helped write their support group curriculum, and assisted with their training of LA County social workers on how to provide effective peer-based grief support to the communities they serve.
In honor of what should have been Margareta's entry into adulthood, and in conjunction with Long Beach Gives - an annual event that supports local nonprofits - I'm asking for donations to help other grieving families via Common Ground. Unfortunately, grief support is very limited and often hard to find. And almost entirely relies on fundraising to cover operations and materials.
