About Us

California Families in Focus (CFF) is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization incorporated in 2002 by Angel Macias and Robert Spieth, which provides services in the city of Long Beach. CFF has a long-standing relationship with many Long Beach nonprofits, LBUSD, CSULB, elected officials, businesses, and foundations.

CFF empowers young people through holistic education. We help young people develop their Mind, Body, and Spirit, cultivate ethical leadership, plan for a successful career, and address issues such as Anti-Bullying and Suicide Prevention, as well as heal generational trauma. Our programs also offer creative expression, academic support, and leadership development, building skills, confidence, and community awareness for lifelong success. We are dedicated to empowering young people, particularly those facing systemic challenges, through holistic wellness, creative expression, academic support, and leadership development, thereby nurturing resilient leaders equipped to thrive and uplift their communities.

Core Programs

"Kim Maddox Scholarship"

Kim Maddox was a beacon for youth empowerment and community building. A proud supporter of LBPD, LBFD, and her alma mater, CSULB. She believed in investing in the dreams of our young people, not someday, but today. And that's what the Kimberly Maddox Youth Scholarship is all about. The scholarship is open to high school seniors and college students aged 17-19 who have been accepted and enrolled in accredited colleges and universities. Recipients will partake in a transformative one-year mentoring program. The mentees participate in active community service programs, complemented by constructive training, to develop into ethical and educated young leaders.

"Hoops &Heroes Basketball Tournament"

Kim was a CSULB basketball Hall of Famer, LB Police Officer, a Mentor with the LB Police Explorers Program, and a Board Member with California Families in Focus. This 3x3 Basketball fundraiser tournament is a collaboration between those three parts of her life. CFF, the Long Beach Police and Fire Departments, along with the CSULB Women's Basketball Team, Kim's love of basketball helped build bridges and foster partnerships and collaborations throughout Long Beach. Hoops & Heroes celebrates unity, inspires youth, and uplifts our everyday heroes through the joy of competition. This event is more than a Tournament; it's an opportunity to build bridges, model positive engagement, and raise vital support for the Kimberly Maddox Youth Scholarship.

 "I Matter 2 Youth program"

"The Spirit of Christmas"

An Annual event that collaborates with a local charity or family organization (children's Hospitals, domestic violence shelters, drug rehab programs, homeless shelters, and organizations supporting disabled youth. Trans Pride Long Beach (Supporting partner)

"Angels on Earth"

The inspiration of long-time Volunteer Alexa Castanon. Alexa envisioned a "big platform" to highlight transgender people who live, work, and thrive in Long Beach. Angel Macias fully supported the idea, and the two created the "Angels on Earth" Christmas dinner and awards banquet. In collaboration with other allied community organizations and businesses, the event honors members of the trans community who selflessly contribute to the community.

Long Beach Trans Pride Festival

A one-day event to highlight, empower, inspire, and normalize our vibrant trans and nonbinary community. Exhibiting strength in unity with 300+ members of the Trans and Non-Binary community and their allies. The festival gives a voice to non-conforming members of the community and provides a space where being yourself is elevated and celebrated.

The Festival:

• Welcomes all members of the trans and nonbinary community at any stage of transitioning,

• Spreads awareness, visibility, and representation of the trans community,

• Draws focus on the rights and importance of building strength in unity.
