On a single spring Sunday each year, something quietly powerful happens in Belmont Heights.

Belmont Heights Make a Difference Day brings neighbors together with a shared purpose: to turn one day into real, tangible support for people across Long Beach. It’s part of a city-wide day of giving that highlights local charities doing essential work—but our hope is simple and direct: when you’re deciding where to give, we want Belmont Heights Make a Difference Day to be one of the places that feels worth your trust, your time, and your support.

This is a day rooted in service and connection. What began more than 30 years ago as Temple Israel Long Beach’s Mitzvah Day—“mitzvah” meaning “good deed”—grew from a powerful idea: that faith communities alone could expand their reach by opening the doors wider. With that vision, partners came together across Belmont Heights, including Belmont Heights United Methodist Church, the Belmont Heights Community Association, Being the Church, the Offices of Kristina Duggan, and community supporters like Domino’s Pizza Belmont Heights, building a shared tradition of service that continues to grow each year.

Today, Belmont Heights Make a Difference Day supports a wide range of needs across Long Beach. Donations help fund efforts that collect and distribute food and furniture to families in need, support organizations feeding our unhoused neighbors, and provide volunteer crews for local nonprofits and community projects that simply need more hands to get the work done.

What makes this effort different is how local it is—and how immediate the impact feels. Every dollar given stays close to home. Every contribution helps neighbors help neighbors.
