For generations, the gas lamp-style lampposts along Belmont Avenue have been a quiet, cherished part of Belmont Heights' character. They’re the backdrop to evening dog walks, neighborhood strolls, and porch conversations—a tangible link to our community’s history.
If these lampposts could talk, they’d tell you stories from over a century of neighborhood life (and probably have a few spirited opinions on paint colors). But rust and time are catching up, and 37 of these vintage fixtures desperately need our care.
A Smart, Neighborly Strategy
The City of Long Beach is currently facing a significant fiscal deficit, and while city budgets will eventually recover, rust doesn't wait around for financial turns. Waiting isn't an option if we want to protect these historic resources from permanent damage.
So, we are doing what Belmont Heights does best: stepping up to take care of our own through a practical, phased preservation plan.
Immediate Triage: We are currently conducting a street survey of all 37 remaining lampposts to identify those in the most critical condition. Our short-term goal is to raise enough right now to restore and coat the most at-risk posts first—preventing structural decay before it's too late.
Playing the Long Game: At approximately $900 per lamppost, full restoration is an investment. By protecting the most vulnerable posts today, we preserve our streetscape's history while continuing to advocate so the City can step back in and cover the rest once the budget recovers.
Community-Led Momentum: This effort builds on the amazing spark from our local Eagle Scout candidate who pointed out the problem and started the effort, along with the overwhelming turn-out at our recent Lighting the Way block party. Our neighborhood has shown how much these streetlights mean to all of us—now we are channeling that energy into lasting physical care.
