We provide culturally relevant, accessible, sliding scale full spectrum doula services using the diverse list of doulas from our collective to fit the individual needs of those seeking services. The collective connects clients with birthworkers and doulas that best fit their needs and identity to provide inclusive support to our communities of color. Initially based in Southern California, our collective has expanded across the nation and internationally, allowing us to service even more pregnant women and people of color.
In the beginning of 2023, a new Medi-cal benefit rolled out, Medi-cal recipients are able to access doula support across all pregnancy and postpartum outcomes. Our collective has been training doulas on the benefit, providing services for Medi-cal clients as an approved group provider, and advocating to grow and expand this benefit.
BWOCC continues to host doula trainings that are for people of Color to increase the representation of culturally competent and relevant doula support for marginalized communities. Every year we continue to expand our trainings and offerings. We offer trainings all over the world from Michigan, OC, and Guam.
Research shows that doulas have a multitude of potential benefits including reducing the risk of interventions and negative birthing experiences. Potential benefits of having a doula:
- Reduced medical intervention
- Shorter labor lengths
- Lower necessity for pain medications
- Additional physical and emotional support

We’re living in a time of deep concern, with rising maternal mortality rates and increasing barriers for People of Color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, immigrants, and those seeking maternal care. Many are fearful of accessing insurance or state-supported benefits due to stigma, discrimination, or systemic obstacles. Doulas play a vital role by providing culturally relevant care, advocacy, and support during one of the most vulnerable and important times in a person’s life.
