GRID Alternatives Greater Los Angeles

GRID Alternatives Greater Los Angeles (GLA) provides no-cost solar systems to low-income homeowners and solar job training and placement for underrepresented community members and people of color that experience systemic inequity and barriers to growth within the workforce. Our mission is to empower communities in need by providing access to green technology and energy efficiency services, equipment, and training.

We bring solar energy to frontline communities and train the green workforce of tomorrow through its Energy for All, Single Home Rehabilitation, Commercial/Multifamily, and Workforce Development programs. Our programs assist low-income communities in accessing clean energy technology and solar job training and addresses systemic issues such as underemployment, pollution and energy poverty.

GLA installs no-cost solar systems for low-income homeowners & tenants, generating clean electricity and monthly energy bill savings of about 80%. Since 2007, GLA has installed over 2,000 solar electric systems for low-income households, providing hands-on training to nearly 5,000 volunteers, students, and job trainees, and placed over 700 individuals in fast-growing jobs in the solar and renewable energy industry. In 2022 we will install over 500kW of solar and provide solar workforce training to over 50 trainees.

Our clients have been historically subject to systemic social, environmental and economic injustice. They live within communities of concern that have been disproportionately impacted by economic downturns, environmental racism, and biased federal, state and local policies. Ninety percent or more of our clients are low-to-moderate income and face a considerable set of barriers and challenges including chronic under/unemployment, lack of access to healthcare and mental health services, limited education, and housing instability.
