Mission
UNCF is the nation's largest and most effective minority education organization.UNCF lives up to the ideal expressed in its universally recognized motto "A mind is a terrible thing to waste" by enabling more than 60,000 students each year to attend college. UNCF serves as a national advocate for the importance of education and college readiness and believes that every student needs pre-college education that prepares them for college coursework and success.
Description
UNCF is committed to increasing minority degree attainment, and we believe that strong community partnerships are essential to achieving this mission. Each year, UNCF awards more than 10,000 scholarships and internships, helping students from low- and moderate-income families afford college tuition, books, and room and board. We also provide operating support to our 37 member historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU), enabling them to offer high-quality academic programs in a nurturing, small-college environment—while keeping costs approximately 30 percent lower than comparable institutions.
As a national advocate for the importance of education, UNCF represents students’ public policy interests in Washington, D.C., and raises awareness through media outreach. Locally, our Los Angeles County office is focused on building meaningful relationships with community organizations, businesses, and civic leaders to expand access to higher education for underrepresented students. We currently support hundreds of UNCF students and scholarship applicants from across the county, and we are working to ensure that local students have the financial resources and support they need to pursue and complete a college education.
By partnering with UNCF, community stakeholders play a vital role in shaping the future of education and economic mobility. Together, we can open doors of opportunity, empower the next generation of leaders, and strengthen our communities through the transformative power of education.
