At EXP - the opportunity engine, we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to discover what’s possible and the experience to take their first confident step into the workforce.

This summer, 171 students completed paid summer internships through EXP, including nearly 50 Long Beach students. Next summer, our goal is to create internship opportunities for over 200 students.

Meet Emma: From Sato Academy to Yusen Terminals

This summer, Emma R., a student at Sato Academy of Math and Science, did her paid summer internship at Yusen Terminals, one of EXP’s longtime industry partners.

As an engineering pathway student, Emma didn’t know what to expect at her internship, but she was open to the experience. Through her internship, Emma gained hands-on experience, built professional skills and confidence, and saw firsthand where her education could take her. Her growth and dedication earned her recognition as one of EXP’s 2026 Outstanding Interns.

Emma’s experience is what EXP is all about: connecting a young person with an opportunity that can change how they see their future.

EXP is Growing in Long Beach

And we’re opening more doors. Building on our partnership with Sato Academy of Math and Science, EXP is expanding our reach in Long Beach this school year to Cabrillo High School, where we are supporting students in the Law and Social Justice pathway.

As our Long Beach partnerships grow, so does our opportunity to connect more students with mentors, industry professionals, career exploration, and real-world experiences, including internships like Emma’s.
