Grief can affect every part of a child’s life, including emotional health, behavior, learning, relationships, and physical well-being. Children may experience sadness, anger, fear, guilt, confusion, anxiety, or withdrawal. Some may have difficulty sleeping, concentrating, attending school, or completing assignments. Others may become unusually quiet, clingy, irritable, or aggressive. Because children understand death differently at each developmental stage, they may revisit their grief as they grow and develop new questions. Without appropriate support, grief can contribute to isolation, depression, academic challenges, and risky behavior. Compassionate grief support gives children a safe place to express feelings, honor and celebrate their loved ones, and understand that their reactions are normal. Through age-appropriate activities, trusted adults, and peer connection, children can develop healthy coping skills, strengthen resilience, and regain a sense of safety, hope, and belonging. Early support can help families communicate openly, recognize warning signs, and heal together with patience and understanding.
