More Than Care

A Letter From Agape Direct Support Professionals

Dear Friends Family, Community Members and Supporters,

We are the Agape Christian Homes care team, and every day we have the privilege of sharing life with the adults who call "Agape Home."

We came to this work to provide care and support.  What we didn't expect was how deeply the people we serve would touch our hearts.  Over time, they become more than residents or clients.  We learn their personalities, their favorited foods, what makes them laugh, what they worry about and what makes their eyes light up.  They become people we know, people we care about, and truly, part of our family.

Caring for the Whole Person

Our Work goes far beyond daily routines.  We prepare homemade meals, assist with medications, help with morning routines, make sure everyone has what they need, provide transportation, and help residents get safely to their programs and appointments.  

But some of the most important moments are the ones no one see.  It may be reminding someone to buckle their seat belt, helping them get ready for a special event, encouraging them when they are frustrated, or simply sitting down and listening when something is weighing on their heart.  Sometimes we can solve a problem and sometimes we cannot, sometimes all a person needs is to listen and say, "I'm here.  You're not alone.  Let's take a breath and have a better day."  We have learned that being heard matters. Knowing someone cares matters.

Helping Them Live Life

We believe the adults at Agape deserve more than a safe home.  They deserve a life filled with choices, friendships, experiences, and things to look forward to.  That can be a bowling night, a movie, a barbecue, a dance, a special dinner a beach day, an amusement park or a vacation. We see the excitement before an outing--the anticipation, the smiles, the conversations about where they are going.  We see friendships grow and confidence build.  We see someone who may have started the day upset come home smiling.  To us, these aren't simply activities.  They are moments of life.  Every person deserves the chance to participate, explore, make choices, laugh with friends, and feel that they belong.

Why Your Support Matters

Making these experiences possible takes more than good intentions.  It takes transportation, staffing, admission fees, meals, planning, and resources.   

Your donations can make those opportunities possible.  It might help provide a special birthday celebration, a meal with friends, an evening of bowling, admission to an amusement park, a community outing, or even a vacation.  We don't see a donation as simply paying for a ticket.  We see the person walking through the gate.  We see the smile.  We see friends sharing a meal.  We see the excitement of trying something new.  We see a memory being made.  That is the difference your generosity can make.

From Our Hearts

This work has taught us that caregiving is not simply about meeting someone's needs.  It is about knowing the person behind those needs.  It has taught us patience, compassion, and the importance of celebrating the little things.  It has reminded us that everyone wants to feel valued, respected, included, and loved.  

The adults at Agape have given us many gifts in return.  They have made us laugh, taught us to appreciate simple moments, and reminded us that meaningful life is made up of everyday experiences shared with people who care.  We are proud to be part of their journey.  And we invite you to be part of their journey.  And we invite you to be part of it, too.
