Long Beach Community Table (LBCT) distributes fresh food, hygiene items, and clothing to vulnerable communities in Long Beach. Our gardening program builds, plants, and harvests urban gardens, providing information on all stages of food self-sufficiency, from planting to preserving each harvest.
Due to the pandemic, LBCT expanded its food relief program from serving 50 residents a week to over 1,000 a week in just one month. We have only continued to expand, providing fresh produce and nutritious groceries to over 6,000 local residents weekly, including families, seniors, students, homeless, veterans, and quarantined individuals with disabilities, medical conditions or compromised immunity, in neighborhoods throughout the Long Beach area. Each week, we distribute or redistribute thousands of grocery bags to financially-distressed residents through our mobile and homebound delivery programs. In addition, during our Open Community Hours, anyone in need can pick up free groceries from our warehouse facility.
We also build, plant, and harvest urban gardens for private properties and organizations throughout Long Beach that help people become food-secure. Surplus harvests provide us with fresh, organically-grown produce for our programs.
As one essential thread of an interconnected web of agencies addressing food insecurity for vulnerable populations in the greater Long Beach region, we regularly collaborate with local food recovery organizations like FoodFinders, Food Forward, Long Beach Fresh, and City Heart, as well as farmers' markets, urban gardens, local congregations, and local grocery stores, redistributing food to Long Beach's most vulnerable populations.
