Independence, Choice, and Community Inclusion

For the past 12 years, I have had the privilege of being part of the Disabled Resource Center team, and during that time I have witnessed firsthand the incredible strength, resilience, and determination of the people we serve.

The Disabled Resource Center exists to empower people with disabilities to live independently in their communities, make their own decisions, and advocate for themselves. It's a mission I deeply believe in because I have seen how the right support can transform lives.

One area especially close to my heart is promoting Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. Communication is something many of us take for granted, but for individuals who cannot rely on speech alone, having a way to express themselves can be life changing.

I will never forget working with a young adult who struggled to communicate their needs, emotions, and thoughts. For years, their family often had to guess what they wanted or needed. Through access to an AAC device and the right support, everything changed. The first time they independently communicated a complete message to their family, there were tears in everyone's eyes. They were finally able to share their thoughts, make choices, and participate in conversations that many of us take for granted.

What may have looked like a simple message on a device was actually something much bigger: a newfound sense of independence, confidence, and self-determination. That individual went on to become a stronger self-advocate, communicate their goals, and take a more active role in decisions about their life.

Moments like these are why I have dedicated the last 12 years of my career to this work. Every day, I see people gain not only resources and services, but also dignity, confidence, and the opportunity to live life on their own terms.
