Everyday Heroes: Vests On, Tissues Ready
I’ve volunteered with TIP of Long Beach for a year and a half, and I’ve learned that small acts at the scene of a crisis matter most: a steady voice, a warm blanket, a bottle of water, making a phone call, helping someone take the next step. Heroes don’t always wear capes—sometimes they wear vests and carry tissues.
I started as a volunteer and was so inspired by this work that I’m now the Assistant Program Director for TIP of Long Beach. This immediate emotional first aid and practical support doesn’t just help the people directly affected—it also helps first responders do their lifesaving work and strengthens our whole community in a fragile moment.
It’s changed me, too. Being present on someone’s worst day has shown me how far calm, compassion, and simple, practical care can carry a person.
