Your gift will allow a Long Beach High School student to attend Rotary's youth leadership camp for a life changing experiance!

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intense and incredibly challenging program for high school students, designed to engender passion, resilience, determination, mental toughness, gratitude and compassion in the participating students. Each year, local high school students, chosen for their proven or potential leadership abilities, participate in an all-expense paid camp over several days. The camp is run by RYLA Alumni, and the $615 cost per student is covered by various Rotary Clubs, including Rotary Club of Long Beach. Attendance is free for the participants.

RYLA camps provide a memorable opportunity to learn, grow, have fun, make new friends, and gain a new and improved focus.

In addition, the program will instill in the student participants the value of Service above Self, a core Rotary belief.

This character-building program focuses on leadership, effective communication, trust and cooperation. Utilizing adventure, personal commitments and shared insights, students gain an increased sense of confidence in themselves and in their peers.

We seek Long Beach high school students from all backgrounds who have demonstrated leadership potential and who will benefit from an opportunity to attend the RYLA camp. The impact spreads further as the participants return home and influence other young people.

The RYLA camp takes place at the educational retreat at Idyllwild Pines. The core curriculum for every RYLA camp includes the following topics:

Fundamentals of Leadership and Ethics of Positive Leadership
Importance of Communication Skills in Effective Leadership
Problem Solving and Conflict Management
Elements of Community and Global Citizenship
Building Self Confidence and Self Esteem
Rotary’s Purpose and Service to the Local and International Community

In addition to the core curriculum, RYLA participants can expect to further develop their personal and leadership skills in the following areas:

Communication Skills
Communicate, listen, and write more effectively
Engage in some form of public speaking in a warm, supportive environment
Personal Qualities
Identify the various types of personalities
Help people get along with each other
Manage their own time more effectively
     Avoid stressful situations
     Plan for healthier living
Leadership
Identify the characteristics of effective leaders
Become aware of the various styles of leadership
Observe effective leaders in a meeting situation
     Problem solving strategies
     Brainstorm and think creatively
Engage in practical problem solving and decision making
Use a problem solving model in a practical situation

RYLA goals include:
Demonstrating Rotary's respect and concern for youth
Providing an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders
Encouraging leadership of youth by youth
Publicly recognizing young people who are providing service to their communities

Attendance at a RYLA camp is made possible for the students by the generosity of the men and women of Rotary Long Beach, and by donations to the program through Long Beach Gives. Meeting our LB Gives goal of $9,225 will allow us to provide this experience to 15 deserving students.

Rotary Long Beach and the student participants thank you for your support!
